Watch the Lexus Hoverboard floating in mid-air in a new teaser
Lexus says it has invented a hoverboard — this we already knew. What we haven’t seen is anyone actually riding it.
That’s about to change — although not yet. Lexus has revealed a new teaser for its board, to be ridden by skateboarder Ross McGouran in a full unveiling set for August 5, though the new clip still holds back from showing anyone actually using it.
The board looks as good as ever, crafted from bamboo, carbon fibre, liquid nitrogen-cooled superconductors and permanent magnets, and pouring clouds of vapour in a suspiciously atmospheric manner.
Without seeing it in action around the specially constructed skatepark, though, it’s impossible to tell if it’s something that will be more than a simple gimmick for a one-off video, or a step towards something actually usable,. Either way we’re pretty sure you’re going to want to see the results.
As ever, WIRED must offer the disclaimer that this is not the first hoverboard (claimed to be) in existence. There is even a world record for the longest distance flown on a drone-like hoverboard. Other researchers have experimented with magnetic levitation too. Here’s hoping that Lexus has been more successful.
